Hogs

The U.S. national live price average for barrows and gilts was $39.81 per hundredweight Jan. 24, up from $39.37 Jan. 17.

U.S. hogs averaged $52.73 on a carcass basis Jan. 24, up from $50.79 Jan. 17.

The U.S. pork cutout was $77.38 per cwt. Jan. 24, up from $75.47 Jan. 17.

The estimated U.S. weekly slaughter to Jan. 25 was 2.720 million, up from 2.500 million the previous week.

Slaughter was 2.487 million last year at the same time.

In Canada, the Jan. 25 Signature Five price was C$136.10 per 100 kilograms, up from C$133.54 the previous week.

China’s grain imports have slumped big-time

China purchased just over 20 million tonnes of wheat, corn, barley and sorghum last year, that is well below the 60 million tonnes purchased in 2021-22.

On a per hundredweight basis, the price was $61.73, up from $60.57 the previous week.

Bison

The Canadian Bison Association said Grade A bulls in the desirable weight range sold for C$4.40-$5 per pound hog hanging weight with some sales reported as high as C$5.40. U.S. buyers are offering US$3.85-$4.15 per lb. with returns dependent on exchange rates, quality and export costs.

Grade A heifers sold for C$4.40-$4.80 per lb. hog hanging weight with some sales as high as C$5.10. U.S. buyers are offering US$3.60-$3.80 per lb.

Animals outside the desirable buyer specifications may be discounted.

Lambs

Ontario Stockyards Inc. reported that 351 sheep and lambs and 22 goats sold Jan. 19. It was a very small run because of extreme weather conditions. All lambs sold actively at steady prices to slightly stronger on the lighter lambs. Goats sold steady. All sheep sold steady.
