Hogs

The U.S. national live price average for barrows and gilts was US$38.52 per cwt. Sept. 14 up from $29.88 Sept. 7.

U.S. hogs averaged $50.59 on a carcass basis Sept. 14, up from $36.57 Sept. 7.

The U.S. pork cutout was $76.02 per cwt. Sept. 14, up from $68.56 Sept. 7.

The estimated U.S. weekly slaughter to Sept. 15 was 2.215 million, down from 2.455 million the previous week.

Slaughter was 2.198 million last year at the same time.

In Canada Sept. 15 Signature Five price was C$117.83 per 100 kilograms, up from $105.19 the week before.

China’s grain imports have slumped big-time

China purchased just over 20 million tonnes of wheat, corn, barley and sorghum last year, that is well below the 60 million tonnes purchased in 2021-22.

On a per hundredweight basis price was $53.45 up from $47.71.

Bison

The Canadian Bison Association said Grade A bulls in the desirable weight range sold at prices from C$6.00 per pound hot hanging weight. U.S. buyers are offering US$4.60 or more with returns dependent on exchange rates, quality and export costs.

Grade A heifers sold up to C$5.80 U.S. buyers are offering US$4.40.

Animals outside the desirable buyer specifications may be discounted.

Lambs

Ontario Stockyards Inc. reported 916 sheep and lambs and 12 goats sold Sept. 10. Most lambs traded steady with plainer types all under pressure. Good sheep sold under pressure at prices $5-7cwt lower. Thinner type sheep sold about steady. Goats sold steady.

Beaver Hill Auction in Tofield, Alta., reported 1330 sheep and 242 goats sold Sept. 10.

Wool lambs lighter than 54 lb. were $185-$220 per cwt., 55 to 69 lb. were $190-$218, 70 to 85 lb. were $180-$210, 86 to 105 lb. were $190-$220 and 106 lb. and heavier were $190-$215.

Wool rams were $90-$125 per cwt. Cull ewes were $90-$159.

Hair lambs lighter than 54 lb. were $164-$192 per cwt., 55 to 69 lb. were $169-$210, 70 to 85 lb. were $171-$194, 86 to 105 lb. were $185-$200 and 106 lb. and heavier were $185-$200.

Hair rams were $107-$118 per cwt. Cull ewes were $85-$132.
