Hogs

The U.S. national live price average for barrows and gilts was US$31.25 per hundredweight Aug. 17, down from $36.49 Aug. 10.

U.S. hogs averaged $40.52 on a carcass basis Aug. 17, down from $45.05 Aug. 10.

The U.S. pork cutout was $66.77 per cwt. Aug. 17, down from $71.07 Aug. 10.

The estimated U.S. weekly slaughter to Aug. 18 was 2.459 million, up from 2.333 million the previous week.

Slaughter was 2.340 million last year at the same time.

In Canada, the Aug. 18 Signature Five price was C$121.27 per 100 kilograms, down from $135.74 the previous week.

Farmers in Western Canada can expect price pressure on their new crop of green lentils, as the available supplies among the world’s major lentil-growing nations increase significantly.

On a per hundredweight basis, the price was $55.01, down from $61.57.

Bison

The Canadian Bison Association said Grade A bulls in the desirable weight range sold at prices from C$6 per pound hot hanging weight. U.S. buyers are offering US$4.60 or more with returns dependent on exchange rates, quality and export costs.

Grade A heifers sold up to C$5.80. U.S. buyers are offering US$4.40.

Animals outside the desirable buyer specifications may be discounted.

Lambs

Ontario Stockyards Inc. reported that 2,469 sheep and lambs and 219 goats sold Aug. 13. Lightweight new crop lambs sold barely steady. Heavy type lambs sold $10-$20 per cwt. higher. Good sheep sold steady with leaner types barely steady. Good goats sold at a premium, all others sold steady.

Beaver Hill Auction in Tofield, Alta., reported that 1,794 sheep and 463 goats sold Aug. 13.

Wool lambs lighter than 54 lb. were $185-$230 per cwt., 55- 69 lb. were $195-$228, 70-85 lb. were $210-$248, 86-105 lb. were $200-$248 and 106 lb. and heavier were $190-$224.

Wool rams were $107-$144 per cwt. Cull ewes were $100-$184.

Hair lambs lighter than 54 lb. were $150-$200 per cwt., 55-69 lb. were $174-$224, 70-85 lb. were $200-$267, 86-105 lb. were $205-$248 and 106 lb. and heavier were $190-$220.

Hair rams were $153-$200 per cwt. Cull ewes were $100-$176.
