Hog prices stabilize

Improved pork buying supported cash hog prices in the United States after a two week losing streak.

Retailers are buying pork for October. However, hogs could start gaining weight faster as the weather cools this fall.

Iowa-southern Minnesota hogs delivered were US$50.50-51 per hundredweight Sept. 18, steady from $51 Sept. 11.

The carcas average was $66.94 on Sept. 18, up from $65.47 Sept. 11.

The pork cutout fell to $82.90 per cwt. Sept. 18,from $84.66 Sept. 11.

The estimated weekly U.S. slaughter to Sept. 18 was 2.278 million, up from 2.040 million.

Bond market seen as crop price threat

A grain market analyst believes the bond market is about to collapse and that could drive down commodity values.

It was 2.040 million last year.

Bison continue strong

The Canadian Bison Association said Grade A bulls in the desirable weight range sold at prices up to C$5.30 per pound hot hanging weight. U.S. buyers are offering US$4.25 with returns dependent on exchange rates, quality and export costs.

Grade A heifers sold up to C$5.10, while American buyers are offering US$4.10.

Animals outside the desirable specifications may be discounted.

Sheep

Beaver Hill Auction in Tofield, Alta., reported 1,739 sheep and 531 goats sold Sept. 14.

Wool lambs lighter than 54 lb. were $200-$250 per cwt., 55-69 lb. were $230-$255, 70-85 lb. were $219-$240, 86-105 lb. were $196-$231 and 106 lb. and heavier were $186-$210.

Hair lambs lighter than 54 lb. were $195-$218 per cwt., 5-69 lb. were $204-$239, 70-85 lb. were $205-$237, 86-105 lb. were $194-$222 and 106 lb. and heavier were $180-$191.

Feeder kids lighter than 60 lb. were $180-$225. Good kid goats lighter than 70 lb. were $220-$265. Those heavier than 70 lb. were $230-$275 per cwt.

Ontario Stockyards Inc. reported light lambs sold steady. Heavy types sold $10-15 cwt. higher. Sheep traded $5 higher.
