Hogs steady

Iowa-southern Minnesota hogs delivered were US$56.50 per hundredweight Aug 27, steady to .5 cents lower from $58 Aug 21.

U.S. hogs averaged $71.38 on a carcass basis Aug 28, down from $73.82 Aug 21.

The U.S. pork cutout fell to $84.53 per cwt. Aug 28, down from $87.68 Aug 21.

The estimated U.S. weekly slaughter for the week to Aug 28 was 2.214 million, up from 2.226 million the previous week.

Slaughter was 1.987 million last year at the same time.

Bison

The Canadian Bison Association said Grade A bulls in the desirable weight range sold at prices up to C$5.25 per pound hot hanging weight. U.S. buyers are offering US$4.25 with returns dependent on exchange rates, quality and export costs.

Crop conditions a pleasant surprise

Market analysts found some stressed crops and some good ones on pre-Ag In Motion 2025 crop tours,

Grade A heifers sold up to C$5.05 U.S. buyers are offering US$4.10.

Animals outside the desirable buyer specifications may be discounted.

Sheep

Beaver Hill Auction in Tofield, Alta., reported 1,439 sheep and 208 goats sold Aug. 24.

Wool lambs lighter than 54 lb. were $223-$260 per cwt., 55-69 lb. were $225-$250, 70-85 lb. were $211-$232, 86-105 lb. were $186-$220 and 106 lb. and heavier were $171-$205.

Wool rams were $80-$130 per cwt. Cull ewes were $65-$110.

Hair lambs lighter than 54 lb. were $195-$218 per cwt., 55-69 lb. were $204-$239, 70-85 lb. were $200-$220, 86-105 lb. were $170-$195 and 106 lb. and heavier were $170-$190.

Hair rams were $77-$95 per cwt. Cull ewes were $67-$127.

Feeder kids lighter than 60 lb. were $210-$250. Good kid goats lighter than 70 lb. were $240-$275. Those heavier than 70 lb. were $240-$280 per cwt. Nannies were $100-$195 per cwt. Billies were $123-$170.

Ontario Stockyards Inc. reported that 1587 sheep and lambs and 13 goats traded Aug. 24.

Light lams sold barely stead. Heavy sheep and goats sold steady.
