HOGS

Iowa-southern Minnesota hogs delivered were US$58 per hundredweight Aug. 21, which was little changed from $57-$57.50 Aug. 14.

U.S. hogs averaged $73.82 on a carcass basis Aug. 21, down from $75.48 Aug 14.

The U.S. pork cutout fell to $87.68 per cwt. Aug. 21, down from $89.36 Aug. 14. The estimated U.S. weekly slaughter for the week to Aug. 22 was 2.226 million, up from 2.213 million the previous week.

Slaughter was 2.002 million last year at the same time.

BISON

The Canadian Bison Association said Grade A bulls in the desirable weight range sold at prices up to C$5.25 per pound hot hanging weight. U.S. buyers are offering US$4.25 with returns dependent on exchange rates, quality and export costs.

Bond market seen as crop price threat

A grain market analyst believes the bond market is about to collapse and that could drive down commodity values.

Grade A heifers sold up to C$5.05. U.S. buyers are offering US$4.10.

SHEEP

Beaver Hill Auction in Tofield, Alta., reported that 1,245 sheep and 82 goats sold Aug. 17.

Wool lambs lighter than 54 lb. were $205-$260 per cwt., 55-to 69 lb. were $227-$255, 70-85 lb. were $220-$238, 86-105 lb. were $195-$225 and 106 lb. and heavier were $175-$215.

Hair lambs lighter than 54 lb. were $195-$218 per cwt., 55-69 lb. were $204-$225, 70-85 lb. were $210-$225, 86-105 lb. were $170-$195 and 106 lb. and heavier were $170-$190.

Hair rams were $77-$95 per cwt. Cull ewes were $67-$127.

Feeder kids lighter than 60 lb. were $250-$270. Good kid goats lighter than 70 lb. were $265-$360. Those heavier than 70 lb. were $250-$320 per cwt. Nannies were $130-$210 per cwt. Billies were $157.50-$250.

Ontario Stockyards Inc. reported that 1137 sheep and lambs and 53 goats traded Aug. 17.

All classes of sheep, lamb and goats sold on a good demand at steady prices.
