Hogs lower

Hog demand was fairly light ahead of the U.S. July 4 holiday.

Iowa-southern Minnesota hogs delivered were US$55-$56 per hundredweight July 2, down from $57-$57.50 June 26.

U.S. hogs averaged $73.75 on a carcass basis July 2, up from $72.98 June 26.

The U.S. pork cutout fell to $80.99 per cwt. July 2, down from $81.73 June 26.

The estimated U.S. weekly slaughter for the week to July 2 was 1.696 million, up from 1.675 million the previous week.

Slaughter was 1.631 million last year at the same time.

Bison steady

The Canadian Bison Association said Grade A bulls in the desirable weight range sold at prices up to C$5 per pound hot hanging weight with a few at higher prices.

U.S. buyers are offering US$4.25 with returns dependent on exchange rates, quality and export costs.

Grade A heifers sold up to C$4.85. U.S. buyers are offering US$4.10.

Animals outside the desirable buyer specifications may be discounted.

Light lambs rise

Ontario Stockyards Inc. reported that 917 sheep and lambs and 54 goats traded June 29.

Light lambs traded much higher. Sheep and goats sold steady. Heavy lambs traded $5 to $7 cwt. higher.
