Hogs steady

U.S. hog supplies were ample to packer needs and the price was steady. Packer operating margins improved.

Iowa-southern Minnesota hogs delivered were US$59.50 per hundredweight June 5, steady with $59-$60 May 29.

U.S. hogs averaged $79.30 on a carcass basis June 5, up from $78.14 May 29. The U.S. pork cutout fell to $85.56 per cwt. June 5, down from $86.80 May 29.

The estimated U.S. weekly slaughter for the week to June 6 was 2.12 million, up from 1.856 million the previous week.

Slaughter was 1.926 million last year at the same time. U.S. slaughter is up 5.9 percent so far this year.

Bison steady to stronger

The Canadian Bison Association said Grade A bulls in the desirable weight range sold at prices up to C$5 per pound hot hanging weight with a few at higher prices. U.S. buyers are offering US$4.10-$4.20 with returns dependent on exchange rates, quality and export costs.

Grade A heifers yonger than 30 months sold up to C$4.85. U.S. buyers were offering US$3.90.

Animals outside the desirable buyer specifications may be discounted.

Lambs weaker

Ontario Stockyards Inc. reported that 1,795 sheep and lambs and 57 goats traded June 1.

All classes of well-fed lambs sold $15-$20 cwt. lower. Sheep and goats sold almost steady.
