HOG PRICES RISE

Hog prices rose on rising pork prices, support from rising beef prices and packers raising bids to get needed supply.

Hog futures have fully recovered from the fall after the earthquake in Japan.

U.S. frozen pork supply in February was up 12 percent over December, indicating preparation for stronger exports.

Iowa-southern Minnesota cash hogs delivered to plants were $62 US per hundredweight March 25, up from $60 March 18.

The U.S. pork carcass cut-out value was $93.53 March 25, up from $92.56 March 18.

Volatile temperatures expected for this winter

DTN is forecasting a lot of temperature variability in the Canadian Prairies this winter. Precipitation should be close to average.

U.S. federal slaughter estimate was 2.12 million head, down from 2.14 million the previous week.

BISON STILL STRONG

The Canadian Bison Association said March 11 that grade A bulls in the desirable weight range were $3.50-$3.80 per pound hot hanging weight. Grade A heifers were $3.50-$3.80.

Older than 30 month animals and those outside the desirable weight range may be discounted. Slaughter cows and bulls were $2.50-$2.70.

Reported on-farm prices for feeder animals are $2.25-$2.50 for calves and $2-$2.30 for yearlings.

LAMBS STEADY

Ontario Stockyards Inc. reported 1,352 sheep and lambs and 121 goats traded March 14.

All classes of lambs sold steady. Sheep traded barely steady with fat sheep prices falling. Goats were steady.

Olds Auction in Olds, Alta., saw 72 head trade hands March 22.

Lambs zero to 50 pounds were $2.25-$2.50, 60 lb. were $2.25-$2.50, 70 lb. were $2.25-$2.40, 80 lb. were $2.10-$2.25, 90 lb. were $2-$2.20, 100 lb. were $1.75-$1.85, 110 lb. $1.60-$1.75 and those heavier than 110 lb. were $1.30-$1.60.

Rams were $1.30-$1.60 and ewes were 85 cents-$1.20.
