SASKATOON (Staff) – Fed cattle lost at least $2 per hundredweight in the past week, driven down by less demand from local and American buyers, Canfax said.

Trade on March 7 had steers bid from $72.50-$74.30, with a top of $75, while heifers were bid from $70-$73.25.

Slaughter cow trade was steady. Supplies aren’t a problem and Canfax said manufacturing beef is easier to move right now. Grain-fed cows are trading in the higher end of the range.

D1 and D2 cows were bid from $39-$55. Railgrade bids were steady at $85 per cwt.

Hog prices higher

Good demand for fewer hogs is allowing hog prices to defy the typical March downturn. The average pooled price for Index 100 hogs in Alberta was $169.20 per hundred kilograms, up $4 per ckg for the week. Saskatchewan was up $3.80 to $164.90 per ckg while Manitoba was up $2.90 to $166.06 per ckg.
