Mixed cattle market

SASKATOON (Staff) – It was a mixed week in the cattle markets. Although prices were steady, they held because the Canadian dollar depreciated again. Volumes on offer were up slightly at just over 10,000 head, Canfax reported.

American packers are in the market, but not aggressive since some recently reduced their kills. Local packers are choosing when to take delivery of their inventory.

Trade on March 2 had steers priced between $90.50-$94.20, with calves bid to $95.45, while heifers were priced from $91.25-$92.75.

Hog prices turn down

Prices for slaughter hogs weren’t able to arrest a recent downturn last week.

Index 100 pooled prices dropped below $140 per hundred kg across the West. Saskatchewan prices were $5.80 per ckg lower at $134.70; Alberta prices $6.40 lower at $135.50 and Manitoba prices fell by $4.46 to $134.69.
