Seasonal lull

SASKATOON (Staff) – Despite a three-day week between Christmas and New Years, Alberta hog farmers sent nearly 39,000 head of hogs to market, for an average pool price of $127.50 per hundred kilograms.

Saskatchewan and Manitoba producers weren’t quite so ambitious, sending 13,000 and 28,000 head to market respectively. The Saskatchewan pool price was $128.50, up a dollar from the previous week, while the Manitoba price was up by 33 cents to $134.57.

Cash hog prices in Omaha gained a little bit of strength as the calendar turned over into the new year. Barrows weighing 250-260 pounds traded between $41-$41.75 (U.S.) as of Jan. 3.

Cash cattle markets slow to a standstill over the holidays so no reports are available from either Agriculture Canada and Canfax. They will return next week.

Meanwhile, the cattle markets in Chicago were under pressure as corn prices keep rising and packers aren’t buying aggressively.
