Hogs steady
Alberta’s Western Hog Exchange reported steady cash trade last week with a contract base price for Aug. 21 of 43 cents per pound dressed.
The average Manitoba hog f.o.b. to Iowa was $98.50 per 100 kilograms.
Reuters News Agency reported U.S. Midwest cash hogs traded mostly steady because of profitable packer margins.
However, pork prices weakened to historically low levels. The U.S. Department of Agriculture reported the wholesale pork price was $51.34 US per cwt. on Aug. 20. On Aug. 18, the $51.33 cutout was the lowest since Jan. 8, 2003.

Iowa-southern Minnesota hogs traded at about $35 per cwt. delivered to plants. Illinois hogs were steady at about $34 per cwt. delivered to pork plants, and Ohio hogs traded steady at about $33 delivered to plants and $31 at country points.
Lambs and goats
Ontario Stockyards reported 2,257 sheep and lambs and 94 goats sold Aug. 17. Grain fed lambs sold barely steady while unfinished lambs sold $10-$12 Cdn per cwt. lower. Sheep and goats were steady.
New crop lambs traded $144-$177 per cwt. Lambs in the 65-80 lb. range were $137-$170 per cwt., 80-95 lb were $137-$165, over 95 lb. were $137-$162 and over 110 lb. were $98-$140. Feeders ranged from $140-$190 per cwt.
Kid goats between 35-49 lb. were $50-$70 per cwt. and 50-75 lb. were $70-$100. Young goats were $75-$110 per head. Mature does were $70-$100 per head and billies were $150-$225 per head.
Beaver Hill Auction in Tofield, Alta., saw all sheep and goats sell steady to higher with good demand on all weights. Lambs under 70 lb. were $130-$148 per cwt., lambs 70-85 lb. were $127-$141 per cwt., lambs 86-105 lb. were $124-$134 and lambs over 105 lb. were $118-$134.
Cull ewes were $45-$55 per cwt. and rams were $54-$68 per cwt.
Good kid goats traded between $185-$247 per cwt. Nannies were $57-$87 per cwt. and mature billies were $100-$117.50 per cwt.
Bison report
The Canadian Bison Association reported a steady to strong market for the week ending Aug. 21. Supplies of slaughter animals are keeping even with demand.
Grade A youthful bison bulls in the desirable weight range sold from $2.50-$2.70 per lb. hot hanging weight while Grade A youthful heifers in the desirable weight range were from $2.30-$2.50. Cows and bulls averaged $1.40 hot hanging weight.
