CALGARY (Canfax) – Fed cattle opened the week steady to 50 cents higher compared to the previous week’s close. High-yielding steers were able to hit $90. Local packers continued to be relatively aggressive. A few more numbers are showing with this week’s volume, up nine percent to just over 13,000 head. Although there were no rail grade sales, packer bids appeared to be in the $151-$154 range. Heifers traded pretty much at par with steers. Thursday’s trade saw steers bring $88.00-$89.90 and heifers $88.10-$89.90.
On average, cow prices were up $3-$4. The hold on Australian beef has tightened domestic cow beef supplies.
Feeder cattle traded strong this week. Yearlings were up $2-$3 this week with calves up $1-$2 on average. Buyers, including tax money, smaller farmer feeder, backgrounder and feedlot orders, continue to be extremely active.
Bred cows ranged from $550-$800 for plain types, $800-$1,150 for medium and top quality cows from $1,200-$1,400 with odd sales to $1,500.
