Slaughter prices down

SASKATOON (Staff) – Slaughter cattle opened the week with firm prices but by Sept. 21 had softened by $1 per hundredweight. Canfax said Alberta packers were the most active buyers. Averages, however, held together because more cattle were traded early in the week. Trade on Sept. 21 had steers bring between $77-$79.25 per cwt. while heifers were priced between $77-$80.50.

Slaughter cow trade was also lower: D1 and D2 cows at $44-$52 per cwt., with top bids to $56.75. Railgrade bids were $90-$95 per cwt. Calf prices, however, were up by $1-$2 per cwt. last week.

Volumes were up 16 percent compared to mid-September. Average price for 600-700 pound steers in southern Alberta was $93.25, $92.28 in central Alberta, $91.06 in northern Alberta, 95.63 in Saskatchewan and $97.42 in Manitoba.
