SASKATOON (Staff) – Active packer activity from both local and Ontario buyers added about $2 per hundredweight to slaughter cattle prices this week, Canfax reported.

By the end of the week, however, demand had slowed as packers accumulated adequate inventory.

Overall sales volumes for the week were lighter.

Slaughter cow trade was $1-$2 per cwt. lower this past week as a smaller number of lower quality cows were sent to market. Sales later in the week had a firmer tone.

Feeder cattle prices are showing surprising strength for the time of year, Canfax said, with average prices advancing about $2 per cwt.

Hog prices steady

After two weeks of declines, hog prices leveled out last week.

The average pooled price for Index 100 hogs in Saskatchewan was $190.90, down $1.50 per hundred kilograms for the week. Alberta’s price was down by 90 cents per ckg to $193.30 while Manitoba’s average price ended the week at $194.80, down by $3.10 per ckg.
