Slaughter cattle up

SASKATOON (Staff) – Slaughter cattle prices in Alberta topped $91 per cwt. last week, the highest prices have traded since April 1994.

The rally was fueled by a turnaround in cash prices in the U.S. After Texas and Oklahoma feedlots logged the second-best-ever week of sales at nearly 125,000 head.

Trade in Alberta opened quietly after the New Year, Canfax reported, but prices increased by $3 per cwt. by Jan. 5 as U.S. buyers from the Pacific Northwest were active bidders. Steers were bid between $90.50-$93.60 and heifers between $88.75 to $93.50.

Canfax reported little trade in feeder cattle following the holidays.

Hogs hold onto gains

Hog prices stabilized last week, after rallying through most of December. The pool price for Saskatchewan was up by 20 cents per ckg; by 16 cents in Manitoba and $1 in Alberta.

No. 1 sows were bid at $67 per ckg in Saskatchewan, up $14.
