Plan deals with fusarium

Farmers with fusarium in their winter wheat will have access to a Canadian Wheat Board contracting program designed to make their damaged wheat more salable.

The maximum allowable fusarium level in No. 2 Canada western red winter wheat is two percent.

Under the program announced last week, farmers can deliver wheat with fusarium levels between 2.1 and 3.5 percent under special delivery calls.

Sign-up deadline is Sept. 30, but that could be extended depending on the response.

Producers will receive the payment for No. 2 CWRW, minus a discount based on the level of fusarium relative to the allowable maximum.

Yellow pea prices collapse on lack of demand

China’s tariffs and India’s accumulated stocks from previous imports have curbed those countries’ demand for Canada’s yellow peas just as harvest adds price pressure at the farm gate.

That will then be adjusted to reflect the levels of the mycotoxin deoxynivalenol (DON).

Traditionally the relationship between DON and fusarium levels has been 1:1 (one part per million DON to one percent fusarium).

However in recent years the ratio has been closer to 3:1.

Here’s how the price will be calculated. For a delivery of wheat with 3.5 percent fusarium, the price would be discounted by the difference between that and the two percent allowable maximum (3.5 minus 2), multiplied by a DON weighting factor of three (1.5 times 3), producing a discount of 4.5 percent.
