SASKATOON (Staff) – It wasn’t the result Lawrence Deimuth had been hoping for.

The Turin, Alta., farmer, a self-described supporter of a dual market for wheat and barley, called for a vote on the issue at a recent Canadian Wheat Board Grain Day meeting in Blackie, Alta.

When the hands had been counted, the wheat board system of single-desk selling came out on top by 34 to 30.

In an interview later, Deimuth was able to chuckle about the outcome, but he also suggested it probably wasn’t representative of farm opinion in southern Alberta.

He said 25 to 30 farmers abstained from voting, some had already left the meeting because they didn’t like what the board was saying and most of those who voted for the board system were older farmers.
