HAMBURG, Germany (Reuters) – BASF has bought rights to a genetically modified potato variety.

It bought Modena, a non-food starch potato from Dutch company AVEBE.

The two companies had agreed to co-operate in GM potato development in December.

Modena is going through the European Union approval process for GM crops, BASF said.

The potato has GM properties that give it higher yield of starch for industrial use.

BASF received EU approval in March 2010 for commercial cultivation of the non-food GM potato Amflora, also used for starch. It is being grown in Germany and Sweden this year.
