Winnipeg, Nov. 24 (CNS Canada) – Saskatchewan pea yields came in well above the 10-year average in 2016, according to the final provincial crop report of the year. However, lentil and chickpea yields were below the average.
Average pea yields across the province came in at 42 bushels per acre, which compares with the 10-year average of 33 bushels per acre. The best yields were reported in the northwest, at 48 bushels per acre, while the southern parts of the province saw yields of 38 bushels per acre.

Saskatchewan lentil yields averaged 1,098 pounds per acre, which were down by about 200 pounds from the 10-year average. Chickpea yields, at 1,171 pounds per acre, were down by 100 pounds from the average.
Large calibre (10mm) kabuli chickpeas are currently seeing prices top out at 65 cents per pound in Western Canada, according to Prairie Ag Hotwire data. However, actual supplies that would meet the criteria are few and far between. Most of the country’s chickpea crop is likely destined for feed channels, with feed prices in the 25 to 32 cents per pound area, according to industry sources.
Number 2 Laird lentils are currently topping out at about 60 cents per pound in Western Canada, while red lentils are bid up to 35 cents per pound.
Green pea prices range from C$7.50 to as high as C$9.00 per bushel in Western Canada. Yellow peas range from C$6.85 to C$8.50 per bushel.
