Pulses: Manitoba bean crops nearing maturity

Winnipeg, Sept. 11 (CNS Canada) – Canada exported 101,300 tonnes of peas during the week ended September 3, according to the latest Canadian Grain Commission data. That marked the largest single-week exports in more than four-and-a-half months.

Dry bean crops in Manitoba are at, or nearing, maturity in most cases, according to a report from the Manitoba Pulse Growers. Early harvest operations are underway in the Pembina Valley, with yields of 1,800 to 2,500 pounds per acre reported for pinto beans and 2,000 pounds per acre for cranberry beans.

Number 2 large green laird lentils are currently topping out at about 45 cents per pound, according to Prairie Ag Hotwire data. Red lentil bids range from about 20 to 24 cents per pound.

Top-end green pea bids range from C$7.55 to C$8.50 per bushel in Western Canada, while yellow peas range from C$7.10 to C$8.50 per bushel.

Large calibre (10mm) kabuli chickpeas are currently seeing prices as high as 66 cents per pound.
