Pulses: India looks to South Africa

Winnipeg, September 29 – Following are a few highlights in the Canadian and world pulse markets on Thursday, September 29.

– Dry conditions have aided Ontario’s dry bean harvest, according to a report by Thompson’s. Yields are expected to be between 16 to 19 bags per acre. The five-year average is around 20 bags an acre. Manitoba’s dry bean crop is expected to be 17 to 19 bags per acre, despite a wet and soggy summer.

– Pakistan and Iran are getting down to the fine details regarding a free trade deal between the two countries. According to a report in The Financial Tribune, an agreement should be completed in the next four or five months. Iran has imported more than 166,700 tons of goods valued at $160.4 million from Pakistan since the spring. Chickpeas, lentils and beans were some of the main staples.

– South Africa plans to ramp up pea exports to India, according to a report in the North Glen News.

– Green peas are currently attracting prices of C$6.80 to C$7.50 per bushel at elevators across Western Canada, according to the Prairie Ag Hotwire. The same peas are going for C$6.93 to C$7.85 per bushel in North Dakota and C$7.93 per bushel in Washington/Idaho.
