By Commodity News Service Canada

Winnipeg Oct 16. – The following are highlights in the Canadian and world pulse markets today.

  • There is good demand for chickpeas in the Indian cash market as supplies are limited due to festival season going on in India. The Indian government has issued a fresh notice that duty free chickpeas will be allowed until Dec. 31.
  • Lentils stand to be one of Australia’s more-lucrative cash crops with prices near A$1,000 a tonne, according to a report. A$1=C$0.94
  • Pinto bean growers in the U.S. face increased competition from Mexican farmers, according to a story in the Greeley Tribune. The market is largely driven by exports to Mexico, but that country has had another good growing season. Mexican farmers have used better seed varieties over the past three years and have enjoyed good weather, improving yields. U.S. exports to the Dominican Republic are expected to pick up some of the slack.
