Pulses: Better moisture in long-range Australian forecast

Winnipeg, May 3 (CNS Canada) – Following are a few highlights in the Canadian and world pulse markets on Tuesday, May 3.

– Forecasts are calling for better moisture prospects in Australia over the next three months, according to the Australian Bureau of Meteorology. If realized, the timely precipitation should help fields that have been hurt by dry El Nino weather patterns see some improvement.

– The USDA has announced changes to its Farm Storage Facility Loan program, which will allow for smaller ‘microloan’ options for producers who may not have access to commercial or on-farm storage. Eligible commodities were recently expanded.

– Green pea prices in the C$9.00 to C$9.85 per bushel range are being reported in Western Canada. Meanwhile, top end yellow peas are going for as much as C$12.50 per bushel in some locations. Red lentil bids of 52 cents per pound now being reported in some locations. Meanwhile, number two large green lentils are hitting prices as high as 75 cents and number ones have topped 80 cents at some locations.

– Chickpea prices in Western Canada also remain strong, with large caliber Kabulis’s trading as high as 56 cents per pound.
