Pulses: Australian pea market pressured by Indian import tariff

By Dave Sims, Commodity News Service Canada

Winnipeg, November 21 (CNS) – India’s pulse production could surpass 22 million tonnes in 2017. That would be the second time the country had passed that milestone mark and it would also fall in line with the government’s determination to achieve self-sufficiency in pulse production.
India’s decision to raise tariffs on pea imports is making an impact on Australia’s market, according to a report on The Weekly Times. Since the new tariff was announced earlier this month, delivered No. 1 grade field peas have dropped AU$20 per tonne to AU$300 per tonne. Pea exports from Australia to India were already under pressure due to India’s improving production outlook.
