Global markets: US jobless claims fall

WINNIPEG, February 11 – The following is a glance at the news moving markets globally.

US JOBLESS CLAIMS DROP
US initial jobless claims for the week ended February 6 fell 16,000 to a seasonally adjusted 269,000, according to the country’s labour department.

Figures less than 300,000 indicate a healthy labour force, and the US has had jobless claims under that amount for 49 consecutive weeks.

CANADA’S JOB VACANCY EDGES DOWN IN THIRD-QUARTER
There were fewer jobs vacancies in Canada in the third-quarter, according to Statistics Canada data released on Thursday.

There were 401,000 job vacancies in Canada in the third-quarter and the job vacancy rate was 2.6 per cent.

That figure compares with the second-quarter when there were 437,000 job vacancies in Canada in and the job vacancy rate was 2.8 per cent.

CANADA’S NEW HOUSING PRICES MOVE SLIGHTLY HIGHER
Canada’s New Housing Price Index edged up 0.1 per cent in December, following a 0.2 per cent increase in November. The advance was led by higher new home prices in Ontario and British Columbia, Statistics Canada said in a report on Thursday.

According to StatsCan, December marked the second consecutive month of slowing price gains.
