– The COVID-19 variant first recorded in England is set to ‘sweep the world’ and become the most dominant strain of the virus, according to scientist Sharon Peacock, director of the COVID-19 Genomics UK Consortium. The B117 variant is up to 70 per cent more easily transmitted and 30 per cent more lethal than other variants, according to experts. It has already been found in 50 countries, including Canada.
– Protests in Myanmar saw members of numerous ethnic minorities join forces in demonstrations against the military that took power from the democratically elected government last week. United States President Joe Biden has ordered sanctions against the junta and is promising more measures if power is not ceded back to the elected officials.
