– Negotiations between the United States and Russia began on Monday with the focus on Ukraine. Fears that a large Russian troop build-up along the border with Ukraine could lead to an invasion, is something the U.S. clearly indicated it would not tolerate. Eight years ago Russia invaded and annexed the Crimea from Ukraine and has been backing rebel forces in the Donbass in what has been a simmering civil war.

– Russian President Vladimir Putin claimed victory on Monday over the putting down of protests in Kazakhstan. Following mass protests initially over high fuel costs, Kazakhstan President Kassym-Jomart Tokayev cracked down on the growing demonstrations. To prop up Tokayev’s authoritarian regime, Putin ordered Russian paratroopers to protect strategic facilities. Dozens of people were reportedly killed in clashes with security forces. Putin deemed the protests an attempted coup.

– An apartment building fire in New York City on Sunday killed 19 people, of which nine were children. NYC Fire Commissioner Daniel Nigro blamed a faulty space heater for igniting the fire that spread through the second and third stories of the 19-storey structure. Reports said 13 more people remained in hospital and a total of 60 people were injured in the blaze, largely due to smoke inhalation.
