Global Markets: Trump, Xi agree to trade deal

  • United States Treasury Secretary Scott Bessent said on Thursday that China is to buy 12 million tonnes of U.S. soybeans through January plus 25 million tonnes per year for the next three years. The announcement followed President Donald Trump’s meeting with his Chinese counterpart, Xi Jinping, at the APEC summit in South Korea. The soybean purchases are part of a larger deal between the U.S. and China. Last year, China bought nearly 27 million tonnes of U.S. soybeans.

  • Statistics Canada reported on Thursday that the September canola crush was nearly 1.01 million tonnes, about 74,300 more than the previous September. Oil produced came in at 425,330 tonnes, up almost 30,500 tonnes from a year ago and meal produced increased by about 45,300 tonnes at 589,724.  
  • StatCan also released its grain deliveries report on Thursday, with the total amount for September at more than 7.23 million tonnes. That’s up from about 6.38 million tonnes last September. Canola deliveries of around 1.92 million tonnes edged lower from a year ago while wheat increased to 4.08 million tonnes.
  • Hurricane Melissa has been downgraded from Category 5 to Category 1 and has left 32 people dead in the Caribbean so far, a report said on Thursday. Melissa arrived over the Bahamas today, after it rampaged through Jamaica, Haiti and Cuba. The U.S. National Hurricane Center said Melissa’s winds were about 165 kilometers per hour.
  • Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy said on Thursday that Russia attacked the country overnight with about 650 drones and 50 missiles. As winter approaches, the massive barrage was reportedly targeted at Ukraine’s energy infrastructure and killed three people. Zelenskyy called for more air defences and more sanctions on Russia.
