- Northwestern Europe was dealing with strong winds and rains brought on by Storm Ciaran on Thursday, with airports, trains and schools closed, and at least two people reported dead. Power was out for millions of people and shipping operations were also being disrupted, with reports of 20-metre waves off the French coast.
- Israeli ground forces were advancing towards Gaza City on Thursday but were being met by resistance from Hamas militants as the conflict nears the four-week mark. While many have called for a ceasefire in order to allow for humanitarian aid in the embattled Palestinian enclave, including recent comments from United States President Joe Biden, Israel continues to rule out any pause to the siege.

- Russian President Vladimir Putin signed a law Thursday revoking the country’s ratification of the Comprehensive Nuclear Test Ban Treaty, which he said would bring Russia more in line with the U.S. Russia claims it will not resume testing unless the U.S. does first. The U.S. signed but never ratified the 1996 treaty. China, India, Pakistan, North Korea, Israel, Iran and Egypt have also not ratified the treaty.
