– Russian President Vladimir Putin announced plans Wednesday to ramp up the war in Ukraine by mobilizing reservists. He also warned that Russia will use any means at its disposal in the fight, including the use of nuclear weapons, adding “it is not a bluff.”
– Hurricane Fiona continues to move northward, with projections now having the storm that already devasted Puerto Rico and the Dominican Republic hitting Atlantic Canada by Friday. Prolonged heavy rains and flooding are likely.
– Germany has agreed to nationalize the country’s largest natural gas importer, Uniper, in an effort to prevent an energy shortage in the face of Russia’s war in Ukraine. The deal builds on a rescue package originally agreed to in July. Germany will gain a 99 per cent stake in the energy company, which had been controlled by Finland’s Fortum.
