Global Markets: Nordstrom to close its Canadian stores

– Luxury department store chain Nordstrom announced on Thursday it will cease all operations in Canada, closing all 13 of its stores and cutting 2,500 jobs. Chief executive Erik Nordstrom said in a statement there was “no realistic path for profitability” in Canada. The company intends to seek court approval for a liquidation sale later this month. Last month, retail chain Bed Bath & Beyond was granted bankruptcy protection and will close all 65 of its stores in Canada.

– Ales Bialiatski, Belarussian human rights advocate and recipient of the 2022 Nobel Peace Prize, was found guilty inside a Minsk courtroom on Friday and sentenced to 10 years in prison. Bialiatski and three other colleagues from the Viasna human rights centre were jailed for their roles in protests against Belarussian president Alexander Lukashenko, an ally of Russian president Vladimir Putin. Bialiatski was already in detention for 21 months before his sentence was announced.

– Alex Murdaugh, the disgraced former South Carolina attorney, was found guilty on Thursday of murdering his wife Maggie and son Paul in June 2021. Murdaugh was also found guilty of two counts of possession of a weapon during the commission of a violent crime and prosecutors indicated they will seek a life sentence rather than the death penalty. The case garnered international attention for its various elements after documentaries about it were created by streaming sites Netflix and HBO Max.
