Global Markets: No change in unemployment says StatCan

  • Canada’s unemployment rate was unchanged in September at 7.1 per cent as Statistics Canada released its labour force survey on Friday. StatCan also reported the employment rate nudged up by 60,400 jobs which pushed it above 21.05 million workers or 60.6 per cent. The number of core-aged workers, those 25- to 54-years-old, increased by 109,000 but dropped by 44,000 among those 55 and older while there was little change among workers 15 to 24.

  • Russia targeted missiles and drones at the Ukrainian capital of Kyiv during the early hours of Friday. Reports said nine people were injured as the attacks cut power and water to much of Kyiv. As winter approaches, Russia has focused on impairing Ukraine’s power infrastructure.
  • United States President Donald Trump said on Thursday that he will raise soybean exports to China with President Xi Jinping at the APEC conference in South Korea, Oct. 31 to Nov. 1. With the tariff war between the U.S. and China, the latter has yet to purchase any soybeans from the former in 2025/26. With U.S. growers faced with sagging soybean prices, the Trump administration is said to be preparing a bailout package estimated to be as much as US$13 billion.
  • Maria Corina Machado won the Nobel Peace Prize for 2025 on Friday. Machado is a pro-democracy activist and opposition leader in Venezuela who’s been in hiding for much of the past year. Nobel committee chair Jorgen Watne Frydnes recognized Machado for “her struggle to achieve a just and peaceful transition from dictatorship to democracy.”
