Global Markets: Missile strikes at five railway stations in Ukraine

WINNIPEG, April 25 (MarketsFarm) – The following is a glance at the news moving markets in Canada and globally.

– Five railway stations in central and western Ukraine were struck by Russian missiles on Monday, according to Oleksander Kamyshin, the chair of Ukrzaliznytsia – the country’s state railway. While Kamyshin didn’t provide a lot of detail, the railway issued a separate statement that said the power was out at three stations. Also, Maksym Kozytskyy, the head of the Lviv regional military administration, acknowledged a missile struck the Krasne railway station near the city of Lviv. The attacks came the day after United States Secretary of State Antony Blinken and Secretary of Defence Lloyd Austin met with Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky in Kyiv.

– Emmanuel Macron scored his second term as President of France on Sunday, winning the run-off election with nearly 18.8 million of the votes cast. Chief rival Marine Le Pen received almost 13.3 million votes, the best showing for the far-right leader. Election officials said more than three million votes were either spoiled or left blank. The country will now gear up for its legislative elections in June. Voter turnout was said to be about 72 per cent, the lowest since 1969 for a presidential run-off.

– Just as Pakistan’s new government settles in, it has requested more support from the International Monetary Fund (IMF). On Monday, Pakistan’s Minister of Finance, Miftah Ismail, asked the IMF to increase its US$6 billion program for the country. As well, Ismail announced the government is slashing its subsidies to Pakistan’s oil and gas sector. Officials from the IMF are scheduled to conduct a review of Pakistan’s finances in May.
