Global Markets: Iran carries out public execution

WINNIPEG, Dec. 12 – The following is a glance at the news moving markets in Canada and globally.

 

  • Iran has carried out its second public execution of a protester, hanging Majidreza Rahnavard from a crane less than a month after he fatally stabbed two members of a paramilitary force. At least a dozen other people have been sentenced to death by authorities, with thousands detained.

 

  • Fighting in Ukraine continued over the weekend as Russian forces targeted infrastructure in eastern and southern regions of the country with drones, missiles and artillery. Many Ukrainians remain without electricity, although power was slowly being restored in some areas. With no end in sight to the conflict, Ukrainian allies are reportedly considering placing more sanctions against Russia.

  • An attack on a hotel in Kabul, Afghanistan popular with Chinese nationals and other foreigners ended with at least three of the attackers killed by security forces. Witnesses reported multiple blasts and bursts of gunfire with dozens of injuries – including two foreigners injured while trying to escape by jumping from the hotel balcony, according to an official with Afghanistan’s ruling Taliban.
