Global Markets: Explosions kill 103 people in Iran

– A pair of explosions at an event commemorating a deceased general killed at least 103 people and wounded at least 141 others in the Iranian city of Kerman on Wednesday. Iranian state media called the explosions a “terroristic attack”, but no groups have claimed responsibility. The event marked the fourth anniversary of the death of Gen. Qassem Soleimani, head of the Revolutionary Guard’s Qud Force, who was killed by a strike from a United States drone in 2020.

– NATO announced on Wednesday it will help purchase up to 1,000 Patriot missiles for allies to better protect their territory as Russia continues its aerial assault on Ukraine. The group of nations interested in purchasing the defense missiles, which could be worth up to US$5.5 billion, include Germany, the Netherlands, Spain and Romania. The missiles could potentially free up other countries’ defense systems for Ukraine. NATO only provides non-lethal support for Ukraine, but member nations can send weapons.

– A new study released on Monday from the Canadian Centre For Policy Alternatives (CCPA), an Ottawa-based think tank, revealed that Canada’s 100 best-paid CEOs are making a record 246 times more than the average worker in 2022. The 100 CEOs made an average C$14.9 million that year, exceeding the record of C$14.3 million set in 2021. Meanwhile, the average worker made C$60,600 in 2022, a rise of C$1,800 from the year before, but not enough to keep up with inflation.
