- Dozens of people are believed dead after a boat carrying migrants capsized in the central Mediterranean. Only four of the 45 people onboard the vessel survived the shipwreck and were brought to the Italian island of Lampedusa after their rescue.
- The value of building permits issued in Canada was up by 6.1 per cent in June compared to the previous month, hitting C$11.6 billion, according to a report from Statistics Canada. Sharp increases in the institutional and industrial sectors more than offset declines in the residential sector.
- Russia’s defence minister Sergei Shoigu said the country will build up military forces along its western border claiming “the collective West was waging a proxy war against Russia” following Finland’s membership into NATO. The ongoing conflict between Russia and Ukraine saw Russia shoot down two drones near Moscow on Wednesday, while Belarusian soldiers are reportedly being trained with Russian tactics.
