Global Markets: Canadians to exit Gaza into Egypt

– Some Canadians will be allowed to leave Gaza via the Rafah border crossing in Egypt starting today, according to an email from Global Affairs Canada (GAC) shared with CBC News. In the email, GAC asked Canadians who received the email to arrive “as soon as possible” at 9 a.m. local time. Egypt’s government will allow those crossing to stay for a maximum of 72 hours before disembarking elsewhere. In an interview with ABC News on Tuesday, Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu said he was open to “little pauses” in fighting in order to facilitate the release of hostages, but asserted that Israel will have “overall security responsibility” in Gaza after the end of its war with Hamas.

– A non-binding motion to expand a carbon tax pause on all forms of home heating was defeated in the House of Commons on Monday. The motion, proposed by the Conservatives and backed by the New Democrats, was defeated 186 to 135 with Liberal, Bloc Quebecois and Green MPs voting against it. The New Democrats will bring their own proposal to debate on Tuesday, which would remove GST off home heating.
