Global Markets: Canadian unemployment rate edges higher

  • Canada’s unemployment rate increased 0.1 percentage point in July, hitting 5.5 per cent, according to a report from Statistics Canada. That marked the third consecutive monthly increase.

 

  • Ukrainian sea drones reportedly attacked the Russian Black Sea naval base of Novorossiysk on Friday, damaging a warship. Russia’s Defence Ministry said the drones were repelled outside of the base and made no mention of any damage, while Ukrainian intelligence sources said the Russian vessel suffered a serious breach. The port is a major grain and oil loading site, with normal operations reportedly resuming hours after the attack.

 

  • Average daily sea surface temperatures (SST) hit a global record this week of 20.96 degrees Celsius, according to a report from the Copernicus climate modeling service. Scientists say the record will likely continue to be broken, with average global ocean temperatures typically hitting their hottest levels in March.
