– In 2021 census data released by Statistics Canada on Wednesday, the country’s population was pegged at a little below 37 million people. That’s a 5.1 per cent increase since the 2016 census and the largest growth among the G-7 countries, according to the federal agency. The report noted that immigration and not the birth rate was responsible for the population increase. – People in Alberta are no longer required to show their QR code to be in restaurants or entertainment venues. Premier Jason Kenney made the announcement on Tuesday with the new measures having taken effect at midnight. Also, capacity limits for smaller venues were removed, while those for larger facilities were eased. Plus all students will be exempt from wearing masks at school by Feb. 14. Saskatchewan, Ontario and Quebec also recently announced they too are easing their restrictions.
– The Russian ambassador to the European Union, Vladimir Chizhov, stated in an interview with the BBC that a diplomatic solution to the border crisis with Ukraine remains possible. However, Chizhov refused to say whether Russian President Vladimir Putin would order the 100,000 troops along the Ukrainian border to stand down from their war-footing. Russia has often repeated it has no intention of invading Ukraine, but has continued to demand NATO exclude the country from any membership and the Baltic States also withdraw from the Western alliance.
