- Many U.S. markets are closed Monday in celebration of Juneteenth, which marks the day in 1865 that enslaved people in Galveston, Texas found out they were freed – two years after the Emancipation Proclamation was issued during the Civil War. Long recognized by Black Americans, Juneteenth only became an official federal holiday in 2021.
