- The deal allowing Ukrainian gain exports to move through the Black Sea has been extended, according to reports from the United Nations. In a statement, UN Secretary General António Guterres said, “I welcome the agreement by all parties to continue the Black Sea Grain Initiative to facilitate the safe navigation of export of grain, foodstuffs and fertilizers from Ukraine.” The news came as Russian attacks on Ukrainian energy infrastructure continued.

- After over a week of counting ballots, Republicans in the United States are now projected to have secured a small majority in the country’s House of Representatives, tipping the balance of power in the lower house. President Joe Biden’s Democrats held control of the Senate. While Republicans were able to secure the 218 seats needed for a majority in the House of Representatives, many candidates backed by former President Donald Trump failed to win.
- The number of Canadians receiving Employment Insurance dipped by 27,000 people in September, with the total number of beneficiaries at 455,000, according to a report from Statistics Canada. That was comparable to the 447,000 seen in February 2020 before the COVID-19 pandemic. The unemployment rate was down by 0.2 per cent in September, at 5.2 per cent, as fewer people looked for work.
