Feed Grains: Chinese grain production edges down in 2016

By Commodity News Service Canada

WINNIPEG, Dec. 15 (CNS Canada) – Official Chinese production data released today showed a slight drop in total grain production on the year.

Overall grain production in the country for 2016 was pegged at 616 million tonnes, which was down by 5.2 million from the previous year.

Russia is looking to expand its grain handling capacity to 150 million tonnes by 2030, according to a report from UkrAgroConsult. That would compare with the 45 million tonne capacity expected for this year.

Corn futures at the Chicago Board of Trade were down on Thursday, as losses in wheat, a rising US dollar, losses in crude oil, and relatively favourable South American crop prospects all weighed on values.

Feed barley bids in the key cattle feeding area of Lethbridge, Alberta were in the C$170 to C$175 per tonne range as of December 9, which was relatively steady compared to the previous week, according to the latest pricing information from the provincial government. Top end feed wheat prices were also steady, at C$189 to C$190 per tonne in Lethbridge.
