Feed Grains: Algerian cereal imports dip in 2015

Winnipeg – Following are a few highlights in the Canadian
and world feed grains markets on Wednesday, January 27.

– CBOT corn futures finished unchanged Wednesday, with the March contract even at US$3.6925 per bushel.

– Egypt’s decision to reject a French wheat cargo ship because it contained some fungus contamination has raised eyebrows. The reason is because in the past Egypt has accepted up to 0.05 percent ergot, according to Agritel, a research firm in Paris.

– A new fast-maturing wheat variety is raising hopes in Australia. The Mace-related variety (RAC2341) is the brainchild of Australian Grain Technologies and can be sown earlier than normal to take advantage of prime-flowering periods in Australia, according to a report in stockandland.com.au

– According to Algeria’s Press Service, the country’s cereal (barley, corn and wheat) imports totalled US$3.43 billion in 2015. That is a 3.14% drop in value from the previous year even as the actual volume rose 11.2 percent (13.67 million tonnes in 2015 compared to 12.29 the previous year).

– Corn plantings in 2016 will rise in Brazil at the expense of soybeans, according to chemical and agricultural company DuPont.

– Feed barley bids in the key cattle feeding area of
Lethbridge, Alberta were in the C$209 to C$214 per tonne
area as of January 22, which was relatively unchanged compared to the previous week, according to provincial reports. Feed wheat prices were in the C$222.50 to C$232 range, which were slightly higher.
