Glacier FarmMedia — The Canadian dollar closed below 72 United States cents for the first time in more than a month.
The loonie closed at US$0.7198 or US$1=C$1.3893, compared to US$0.7230 or US$1=C$1.3832 on Tuesday. The last time the currency closed this low was on Aug. 21.
The United States Dollar Index was up 0.62 of a point on Friday at 97.88.
Crude oil prices jumped due to geopolitical tensions, supply concerns and a draw in United States stockpiles.
West Texas Intermediate gained US$1.43 per barrel at US$64.84. Brent crude oil rose US$1.52/barrel at US$69.15.
The TSX/S&P Composite Index surpassed 30,000 points again on Wednesday, but could not stay above that level as it closed at 29,756.95 points, down 58.68 from Tuesday.
Gold tumbled US$51.20 per ounce at US$3,764.50.
