Canadian Financial Close: Loonie, crude oil make gains

WINNIPEG – The Canadian dollar started the week on a positive note.

The loonie closed at US$0.7473 or US$1=C$1.3382, up from US$0.7451 or US$1=C$1.3421 on Friday. The United States Dollar Index gained 0.04 of a point at 104.06.

Crude oil prices were steady to higher on Monday, due to increasing Chinese demand and decreasing Russian exports. Brent crude oil added US$0.48 per barrel to US$88.11. Meanwhile, West Texas Intermediate (WTI) was unchanged at US$81.64/barrel. Western Canadian Select (WCS) gained US$0.49/barrel to US$58.57.

The TSX/S&P Composite Index rose 128.37 points to 20,631.58.

Gold was up US$4.10 at US$1,932.30 per ounce.
