WINNIPEG – The Canadian dollar was in decline to start 2023.
The loonie was at US$0.7325 or US$1=C$1.3652, down from US$0.7383 or US$1=C$1.3544 at Friday’s close. The Bank of Canada (BoC) did not post an exchange rate on Jan. 2 due to the New Year’s Day holiday.
The United States Dollar Index surged 0.98 of a point at 104.50.
Crude oil was down on Tuesday, pressured by a strong U.S. dollar. Brent crude oil fell US$1.70 to US$84.21/barrel. West Texas Intermediate (WTI) dropped US$1.71 at US$78.55/barrel. Western Canadian Select (WCS) lost US$1.57 to US$51.07/barrel.
The TSX/S&P Composite Index jumped 230.67 points to 19,615.59.
Gold rose US$19.60 per ounce to US$1,845.80.
