Canadian dollar and business outlook

WINNIPEG, December 31 The Canadian dollar strengthened against its US counterpart on Thursday, as new US jobless claims data weighed slightly on the greenback.

At 8:45 a.m. CST the Canadian dollar was at US$0.7208 or C$1.3873 which compares with Wednesday’s North American close of US$0.7202, or C$1.3885.

New US jobless claims rose by 20,000 to sit at 287,000 for the week ended December 26, according to the country’s labour department.

There was no significant economic data released by Statistics Canada on Thursday.

The TSX was weaker in early activity, down 43.68 points at 8:45 a.m. CST to sit at 13,098.61.
