Hogs

The U.S. national live price average for barrows and gilts was $77.01 May 30 and $71.02 May 23.

U.S. hogs averaged $95.40 on a carcass basis May 30, up from $94.86 May 23.

Calf hormone implants can give environmental, financial wins

Hormone implants can lead to bigger calves — reducing greenhouse gas intensity, land use intensity and giving the beef farmer more profit, Manitoba-based model suggests.

The U.S. pork cutout was $107.22 per hundredweight May 30, up from $101.46 May 23.

The estimated U.S. weekly slaughter to May 30 was 1.909 million. It was 2.352 million the previous week.

Slaughter was 1.923 million last year at the same time.

In Canada, the May 31 Signature Four price was $227.82 per 100 kilograms, up from $226.43.

The May 31 Hams Marketing cash price was $225.82, while on May 24 it was $224.77. HyLife was $242.67 this week and $242.14 May 24. OlyWest was $231.50, up from $229.10 last week.

OlyWest 2021 was up, at $240.60, from $237.20, and HyLife’s adjusted price was $244.21 this week. On May 24 it was $242.14.

Bison

The Canadian Bison Association reported domestic carcass prices of $635-$695 per cwt., hot hanging weight, for finished bulls and $610-$660 per cwt. for finished heifers.

Mature bulls were $500-$550, while mature cows were $500-$550 cwt.

Carcass prices for bison sold into the United States were US$485-$500 per cwt. for bulls and $450-$470 per cwt. for heifers.

Prices for mature bulls and cows were not available.

All prices are subject to fluctuations in the market and dollar exchange rates.

Prices for live bison in Canada were C$4.60 per pound for bulls and $4.50 per lb. for heifers of good quality or better.

The mixed live animal price was $4.92 per lb.

Lambs

Ontario Stockyards Inc. reported that 429 sheep and 1,560 lambs sold May 26.

Beaver Hill Auctions at Tofield, Alta., reported that 2,716 sheep and 589 goats sold May 26.

Wool lambs lighter than 54 lb. were $400-$478 per cwt., 55-69 lb. were $390-$455, 70-85 lb. were $390-$445, 86-105 lb. were $373-$450, and 106 lb. and heavier were $325-$375. Wool rams were $190-$335 per cwt. Cull ewes were $140-$315.

Hair lambs lighter than 54 lb. were $300-$375, 55-69 lb. were $335-$398, 70-85 lb. were $380-$418, 86-105 lb. were $360-$430 and 106 lb. and heavier were $320-$405. Hair rams were $220-$320 per cwt. Cull ewes were $170-$375.
